It's 2:36 here which means it's time for some sleep. I've been playing entirely way too much of this game.

I suppose I should get to grips with Gods & Kings and the faith mechanic before getting BNW... but then again, this is the game that has the option "just one more turn" after you win...

I'm obsessed with the Mongol scenario from the original game... Only won it once in deity. It's incredibly addictive.

I haven't gotten my hands on Brave New World, but remember how the media demonized World of Warcraft? This game is just as addictive. Even though I rarely go to war, it's fun to manipulate other nations and then expand quickly while they're wrapped up fighting each other.

2:30 is early for a Civ V ending. I can't start a game anytime after 8 pm, because it guarantees I'm up until 4 am.

I made myself go to sleep at that time, as I went to sleep at 5am the night (morning?) before. It was easier to tear myself away from it after I had already won and most of the world hated me.

I was never interested much in religious and cultural victories in G&K but once I got into BNW it started making more sense so you don't have to worry much about that. One thing you will definitely want to have knowledge in is city states (at least in the way I play). In BNW you are part of a world congress or united nations depending on how far you have progressed into the game and you receive a number of delegates for various things. The easiest way I've found to get delegates is becoming allies with a city state which gives you either one or two delegates again depending on how far you have progressed.

This is the gaming community's dirty little secret. I don't know anyone that doesn't play this game that knows anything of it, let alone hearing of it. As for the manipulative fun I definitely know what you mean. War isn't that fun for me in the game. But ruling the world through trade routes, number of delegates, and tourism? That I can definitely get hooked on!

I dig Sweden when it comes to ruling the world scientifically. So many Great Scientists . I tried a game as Babylon and as Korea and I couldn't get the same steamroller effect as I had under Gustavus Adolphus. I was popping Great Scientists on about 60% of my technologies. Not one nation could keep pace, and even espionage wasn't a concern.
Sweden in Gods & Kings is downright obscene. I'm not sure if it's as good in Brave New World, but this game has definitely been a contributor to a few very late nights. That one more turn quickly becomes one more tech, one more era, one more social tree... one more sleepless night.
Oh, and Sabaton's album Carolus Rex is required listening when playing as Sweden. An album about the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire? That'll do nicely while the Caroleans storm my neighbors' lands.

I have yet to find a victory type that doesn't work well with Austria. The fact that you only need to make 3 or 4 cities of your own then buy city states is just ridiculous. If you can handle gold and city state relations well Austria is almost overpowered. My friends refuse to play against me if I use Austria as I gain a majority stake in the world before they're building their 5th city.

I haven't even played as Austria. There are so many different civilizations in the game, and a game lasts so long that I don't imagine I'll ever get to play them all. Out of interest, what game speed do you play on?
I'm terrible at building cities - I tend to go for a very, very tall civilization. When playing as Sweden I had three cities; Stockholm had 30+ population and my other two were in the mid to high-twenties. It works, but it just doesn't work with civs like Rome. My go-to civs are Russia, Germany, and Sweden. I like their music, as terrible a reason as that is for making choices.
Austria is meant to be downright incredible though, from what I've read around their unique abilities. Venice is also meant to be totally overpowered if you like to play with city-states.
I really need to play another game of Civ. I have hours to kill choosing Technologies and placing spies around my neighbors.

I downloaded the pirate civ and haven't seen daylight since....
